Sponsorship
With your support, we are aiming to raise £1000 for two charities. Sustrans (chosen by John)
conduct their charitable activities within the UK, whereas funds raised for War Child (chosen by Mike)
benefit several overseas countries affected by war. It would be fantastic if you could share your charitable
donations between the 2 charities. Donations are being taken through JustGiving - it couldn't be easier to
support us!
UK Charity - Sustrans (chosen by John)
Sustrans is the UK's leading sustainable transport charity. Sustrans not only promotes the sustainability
of our environment, but also facilitates an improvement in the nation's health by providing people with
the option to travel in a way which is beneficial to their health. With nearly a quarter of adults in the
UK being obese, and an incline in disorders linked with a lack of physical activity (such as Type 2
Diabetes), it is important that an infrastructure exists to support an active nation.
Those of you who are not aware of the charity may have seen the fruits of their labour in your local area.
The National Cycle Network covers over 12,000 miles in the UK. 75% of the nation is within 2 miles of a
National Cycle Network Route.
The Sustrans
website is full of information about
the charity, and the projects that the donated money funds. For a more detailed breakdown of their income
and expenditure, check out the Charity Commission
website.
International Charity - War Child (chosen by Mike)
War Child UK is a member of the War Child International group. The UK offices of the charity currently work to
support and rehabilitate child victims of war in Afghanistan, Congo, Iraq and Uganda. These victims include
former child soldiers, street children and children in prison.
War Child works with local authorities, governments and other aid organisations in both conflict and post-conflict
areas to support children and the people that they depend upon. The various projects they are working on involve
reconnecting children with their families and communities, ensuring sustainable security for children and addressing
the developmental needs of the most vulnerable and marginalised children.
More information about War Child and its current projects can be found on their
website. The Charity Commission
website
provides further information on the charity's income and expenditure.
